Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA Preschoolers Spread Joy in Active Older Adults Wellness Class

Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead took a unique approach to an Active Older Adults (AOA) wellness class by inviting some summer Y camp preschoolers to join and interact with class participants.

The young campers took part in an osteoporosis class for about 20 minutes interacting with AOA class members – first by taking part in a fun introduction ceremony that included cheering after each introduction. Once the class started, the preschoolers and the AOA participated in a fun warm up of standing marches and arm/hip circles with songs and dance.

Wellness studies show intergenerational interactions are beneficial to every age group. Young children develop greater social and emotional skills and increased respect, compassion and empathy, while older adults report improved quality of life, cognitive health improvement and decreased social isolation.

Sanders member Mary Ellen Knox, 70, said having the preschoolers join the class was a joy.

“It was a delight having them. They are so sweet, and their energy is so uplifting,” said Knox. “Watching the little campers go and come all summer really is a highlight and it makes the regular routine of coming to work out a little more fun. I think that’s what a lot of us need – their smiles, energy and questions. It gives us a little more purpose.”
