The YMCA of Metro Atlanta, City of Atlanta Parks and Recreation, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, The American Red Cross and WABE announced the development of the Atlanta Water Safety Coalition.

The coalition is focused on age-based strategies and creating opportunities for greater access to swim and water safety lessons for youth and teens. Currently, the highest rates of drowning occur with children ages 1-4 and boys ages 15-19, with children of color at higher risk.

The Atlanta-based organizations joined forces on Thursday, June 22 at Grant Park to participate in the “World’s Largest Swim Lesson Day,” a nationwide initiative designed to teach kids how to swim and raise awareness about drowning prevention.

This collaboration is an extension of the Y’s water safety partnership with the City of Atlanta. In May, the organization partnered with Mayor Andre Dickens to host the city’s 2023 Summer Youth Employment Program signing event, which highlighted efforts to build and maintain a pipeline of certified lifeguards. Through a partnership with the Y and City of Atlanta, the American Red Cross has been essential in providing lifeguard training.
