Celebrate YMCA of Metro Atlanta Afterschool Professionals April 22-26
This week, April 22 – 26, is designated Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, and YMCA of Metro Atlanta is joining educational institutions across the country in celebrating afterschool professionals for their tireless work to provide guidance and educational programs for students during out-of-school hours.
Currently, YMCA of Metro Atlanta serves 2,449 students (primarily K – 5th grade) through its afterschool program. Youth in this program participate in programmed activities, club activities, and imagination stations to align with the YMCA’s strategic plan goals for career awareness and skill building for grades K-5.
“The time between when kids get out of school and when they go home is very important in shaping their lives,” said Mary Moua, YMCA Quality Youth Programs Director. “What we do is offer them a safe and fun place to support their academics.”
According to the National Afterschool Association:
• An estimated 7.8 million young people participate in afterschool programs yearly in the U.S.
• More than 850,000 afterschool professionals – the those who work with children and youth during out-of-school time – they are part of a highly skilled and valuable profession.
The Y’s afterschool teachers and directors spend time making sure kids are taking part in activities that are educational and engaging such as Goose Chase, a virtual scavenger hunt game that allows children to work together to achieve a mission. The afterschool program also offers youth an opportunity to participate in theme clubs such as civic, cultural and nature focused areas.
“Our afterschool professionals are not babysitting. They are involved and providing time, effort and training to support our youths so they can be prepared in academics and life,” said Moua.
The Y celebrates its afterschool professionals this week and every week. Thank you for what you do to better our youth and community.
